Head of the Buddha

Bronze

15th Century

Sukhothai Period, Thailand

Height: 9¾″, 24.8 cm

This commanding head of Buddha is a good example of the 14th century in the Sukhotai Kingdom of North-Central Thailand. The Buddha has heavily-lidded downcast eyes with finely arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, and slight smile. His hair is beautifully aligned in delicate small snailshell curls and topped with a flame- form finial. The ears are fragmented and his head is finely polished.
